Brazosport High School News

Senior Thalia Pina competed over spring break at the Girl's State Powerlifting Meet. She set personal records on each of her lifts. Her bench press was 210 lbs, her squat was 420 lbs, and her deadlift was 340 lbs. She ended up placing 10th for her weight class with lifting a new personal record total of 970 lbs. Thalia has been a part of the powerlifting program all 4 years of her high school career. Through her hard work and dedication she has had a very successful journey. Her freshman and sophomore years she made it to regionals and was a state alternate her sophomore year. This is her second consecutive year making it to the state meet. Last year she placed 5th and won the regional meet in her weight class. This year Thalia not only won regionals, but she also set the new regional record for squat at 415 lbs. Thalia plans on using her powerlifting experience and her love for the sport to pursue a coaching career. Way to Anchor Down Thalia! ...

Both boys and girls powerlifting teams competed at Hitchcock against 11 other schools. We had athletes place at both meets. Boys BJ Moore 1st- 1585 lbs Alex Leija 4th- 1170 lbs Elim Castro 4th- 1115 lbs Girls Amara Martinez 1st- 530 lbs Thalia Pina 2nd- 950 lbs Aleigha Madrigal 5th- 575 lbs Lizet Jimenez 5th- 645 lbs Next up for our powerlifters is Regionals. For boys we have BJ Moore and Alex Leija qualified. Our girls who qualified are Ilysa Cantu, Amara Martinez, Aubrey Martinez, Aleigha Madrigal, Lizet Jimenez, Bryanna Leija, Thalia Pina, Amaya Ramos, and Kaitlyn Vela. The boys regional meet will be held at West Hardin High School on 3/11/22. The girls regional meet will be held at Bay CIty High School 3/3/22. ...


Brazoswood High School News

Wednesday, February 2nd marked National Signing Day across the country. This is a day to honor and recognize high school athletes signing their National Letters of Intent (NLI), with colleges and universities, to further their education while participating in athletics. The Brazoswood Buccaneers had four football players sign their NLI today. Dijon James, running back, and Tyshawn Thomas, defensive end, both signed with Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. Thomas and James who have been Buccaneers together since their freshman year will now start all over together as Lobos. Sul Ross State University is a member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC). The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor is also a member of the ASC and their roster will now include Stonewall Vernor. The Buccaneer defensive tackle signed with the defending National Champion Crusader team. The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor is located in Belton, Texas. While Vernor, James and Thomas will stay in state to continue their athletic careers, defensive end Vontroy Malone will head up north to play at the University of Tulsa. Tulsa is a member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The AAC includes schools such as the University of Houston, SMU, Memphis, Tulane and Cincinnati who went undefeated and entered the BCS playoffs as # 4 in the country. Tulsa went 7-6 in the 21-22 season and won the Myrtle Beach Bowl. We are extremely proud and excited for these young men. They have represented our program well and we know they will do great things at the next level....

Our Brazosport lady powerlifters set the bar high at the meet at Galveston Ball High School. They competed against Galveston and Cleveland High School. Our athletes who competed were Aleigha Madrigal, Kaitlyn Vela, Thalia Pina, Karmen England, Ilysa Cantu, Amara Martinez, Lizet Jiminez, and Bryanna Leija. The Buc Powerlifting Team brought home a 2nd place trophy in the first leg of the Gulf Coast Powerlifting League-Bulldog Invitational. Our boy's varsity powerlifting team hosted their first meet against Needville High School and Galveston Ball High School. With all three schools we had 29 competitors. Our athletes who competed were: BJ Moore, Alex Leija, Elim Castro, Matthew Cunningham, and Joseph Waguespack. All of our lifters finished the meet without any bottoming out. Way to Anchor Down!...
